What is IELTS True / False / Not Given?
True / False / Not Given questions present statements about a reading passage. You must decide: True (the passage confirms this), False (the passage contradicts this), or Not Given (the passage neither confirms nor contradicts this). "Not Given" is the most commonly missed.
Strategy & Tips
- Find the relevant section of the passage for each statement using keywords.
- TRUE: the passage explicitly says the same thing (may use synonyms).
- FALSE: the passage explicitly says the OPPOSITE.
- NOT GIVEN: the passage does not mention this information at all — or mentions related content without confirming or denying the statement.
- Never answer based on your own knowledge — only use information in the passage.
- If you cannot find the information after 2 minutes of searching, choose Not Given.
How is it Scored?
- 1 mark per correct answer
- No negative marking — never leave an answer blank
- Not Given is correct when the passage is simply silent on the matter
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between False and Not Given in IELTS?
FALSE means the passage directly contradicts the statement — it says something opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage neither confirms nor denies the statement — the information simply is not there. This is the most common source of errors, as students often confuse "I cannot find it" with "the passage says the opposite."
What is the difference between True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given?
True/False/Not Given is used for factual statements about what the writer describes or reports. Yes/No/Not Given is used for statements about the WRITER'S OPINION or views. The decision logic is otherwise identical.
How can I improve my True False Not Given score?
Practise the exact decision rule: True = passage confirms; False = passage contradicts; Not Given = passage is silent. Underline the keyword in the statement, find it in the passage, and compare very carefully. Avoid making inferences — only use what the text explicitly says.
Is it better to guess True, False or Not Given?
There is no negative marking, so always choose an answer. Statistically, Not Given is often under-selected by test-takers who mistake it for False. If you genuinely cannot find the information in the passage after a careful search, Not Given is usually the right choice.
