What is IELTS Speaking Part 2 (Cue Card)?

IELTS Speaking Part 2 gives you a cue card with a topic and 3–4 bullet points. You have 1 minute to prepare (you can make notes) and 2 minutes to speak. The examiner may ask 1–2 follow-up questions.

Strategy & Tips

  1. Use all 1 minute to plan — write key words for each bullet point.
  2. Speak for the full 2 minutes — stopping before the examiner signals loses fluency marks.
  3. Use the bullet points as a framework but add personal anecdotes and details.
  4. Open with a strong sentence: "I am going to talk about [topic]."
  5. Cover all bullet points — if short on time, mention them briefly rather than skipping.
  6. Practise on a wide range of topics: people, places, events, objects, experiences.

How is it Scored?

  • Fluency & Coherence — continuous speech, logical organisation
  • Lexical Resource — vocabulary range and precision
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy — variety of structures
  • Pronunciation — intelligibility and natural intonation

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should IELTS Speaking Part 2 be?
You must speak for at least 1 minute and up to 2 minutes. The examiner will signal when to stop. Ideally, speak for close to the full 2 minutes — stopping early suggests limited vocabulary or ideas and reduces your Fluency & Coherence score.
What are the most common IELTS Speaking Part 2 topics?
Common Part 2 topics include: a person who influenced you, a memorable trip, a book/film you enjoyed, a skill you would like to learn, a place you would like to visit, a recent achievement, and a childhood memory. Our platform has 200+ cue card topics with model answers.
Can I ask the examiner to repeat the cue card?
No — once your 1 minute preparation time begins, the examiner will not re-read the card. Make sure you read all the bullet points quickly at the start of your 1 minute and note the key question words (who, where, when, why, how).
How do I avoid going blank in IELTS Speaking Part 2?
Preparation is key: practise on 1–2 cue cards daily. Use the "STAR" technique — Situation, Task, Action, Result — for event-based topics. For object or place topics, describe what you can see/feel/experience. Always have a stock phrase ready: "What I particularly like about this is..."
