Sentence Types
Master the four sentence types in English: simple, compound, complex and compound-complex. Learn how to vary sentence structure to improve PTE Grammar scores and IELTS Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
What is Sentence Types?
English sentences are classified into four types based on the number and type of clauses they contain. IELTS Writing Grammatical Range & Accuracy rewards writers who use a variety of sentence structures — over-reliance on simple sentences limits your score to band 5-6, while compound-complex sentences signal band 7+.
Rules & Formation
- Simple: one independent clause (subject + verb + optional elements). "Technology has transformed education."
- Compound: two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) or semicolon. "Technology has transformed education, and society must adapt."
- Complex: one independent clause + one or more dependent (subordinate) clauses. "Although technology has transformed education, challenges remain."
- Compound-complex: two or more independent clauses + one or more dependent clauses. "Although technology has transformed education, challenges remain, and societies must work together to address them."
- In academic writing: aim for a balance of complex and compound-complex sentences. Simple sentences are useful for emphasis and clarity; compound sentences for connecting related ideas.
- Variety is the goal: an essay written entirely in simple sentences is band 5; exclusively complex sentences can feel monotonous. Deliberate variety signals grammatical control.
Examples
For IELTS band 7, your writing should primarily use complex and compound-complex sentences with accurate grammar. Include 1–2 short simple sentences per essay for rhetorical effect or clarity after a complex point. PTE Write Essay AI scoring rewards structural variety — if every sentence begins with "The" + noun + verb, your Grammar score suffers regardless of accuracy. Vary your sentence openings: participle clauses, adverbial clauses, cleft sentences, fronted adverbials.
