What is PTE Write from Dictation?

Write from Dictation (WFD) requires you to listen to a sentence and type it exactly. It is the final task in the Listening section but carries the highest weight of any single task type — contributing to both Listening AND Writing scores. Every word counts.

Strategy & Tips

  1. Listen to the complete sentence once, hold it in working memory, then type.
  2. Use shorthand notes (first letters of each word) during listening if needed.
  3. Type quickly without correcting as you go — finish, then proofread.
  4. Check: capitalisation of the first word, spelling accuracy, and trailing full stop.
  5. Common PTE WFD sentences follow academic English patterns — practise with topic-specific vocabulary.
  6. Do NOT add or omit words — each missing/wrong word deducts marks.

How is it Scored?

  • Each word is scored individually — 1 point per correct word (spelling matters)
  • First word: must be capitalised
  • Last word: trailing full stop required (SunPTE enforces this)
  • Wrong word, extra word, or missing word each cost 1 point
